Wilderness Therapy programs for troubled teens

Wilderness Opportunities’ 21 Day Wilderness Therapy Programs function as an early intervention service for troubled teens, ages 12-18 and represent one of the few such opportunities specifically designed to address the needs of youth struggling in their home, school or community

Our wilderness therapy program is a challenging outdoor, mountain based experience designed to help promote self-discovery, enhance self-esteem, and improve communication skills. Participants will spend 21 days camping in the back country of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains and are provided with a regimented daily structure of highly motivational activities and personal challenges which require teamwork, decision-making, and communication. Participants are challenged with issues of accountability, honesty, integrity, trust, responsibility, anger management and self-confidence. Emotional growth and personal development are explored and re-evaluated in daily group discussions and deepened via spontaneous teaching moments.

Backpacking, mountain peak ascents, rock climbing, high and low ropes courses, and white water rafting are to just some of the activities utilized to help participants learn to face new challenges. By utilizing group initiatives, “challenge activities,” and outdoor education methods Wilderness Opportunities’ 21 Day Wilderness Therapy Program participants are faced with many situations they must rise to overcome.

This program offers a unique and proven approach to helping young people deal with issues that are leading to trouble with school, drug use, authority figures, lack of self-esteem and low social skills.

Therapeutic Counseling Component
Wilderness Opportunities’ PhD level mental health professional and program staff work first hand with participants, family, and family therapists to develop and implement an individualized treatment plan. During intake students are again interviewed to discuss the goals of the program. Throughout the course of the program our mental health professional goes into the field to work with individuals, the group, and the staff to continue successful implementation of student treatment plans. Upon program completion each participant will receive a post-course evaluation which will contain information regarding: how the student performed; assessment of his/her areas of strength and weakness; communication strategies that worked well with the student; and Wilderness Opportunities’ staff recommendations for the future.

For youth whose “reality” has always appeared hopelessly complex and perhaps out of control, the isolation and simplicity of the outdoors can help bring her/him back to basics and into a more manageable world. This is not a “fix it” program. The purpose is to provide families and youth with a chance to explore new opportunities and learning that will help foster their future healthy personal growth and development.
